Donald M. Murray is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of New Hampshire where he inaugurated a journalism program, designed and advanced composition course, helped establish a graduate program in composition studies, and served as director of freshman English and as English department chairperson. He twice won awards for his teaching and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of New Hampshire in 1990, Fitchburg State College in 1992, and New Hampshire College in 1997.

As a journalist, Murray won a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing on the Boston Herald in 1954. He was an editor at Time before freelancing as a magazine writer in New York City for seven years. He served as writing coach for the Boston Globe, the Providence Journal, and other newspapers. He writes a weekly column title "Over Sixty" for the Boston Globe. In 1991 he was selected best columnist in Boston by Boston magazine and in 1996 he earned the same honor from Improper Bostonians magazine.

In addition to his textbooks on writing and teaching writing, Murray also writes novels, poetry, and he is currently working on a book about the relationship between writing and art.
